Cedric Benson arrested, alleges cop abuse Bear will fight charges; says he didn't resist arrest, wasn't drunk
Cedric Benson fully intends to fight misdemeanor charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest stemming from a Saturday night incident near Austin, Texas, during which police used pepper spray to detain him.
Lower Colorado River Authority police arrested the Bears running back, who played at the University of Texas in Austin, on Lake Travis during a random safety inspection. An LCRA spokesman said Benson, who failed a sobriety "float test" (an abbreviated version of a field sobriety test) on his 37-foot yacht, argued over taking a follow-up test on land and refused to put on a life jacket. LCRA officers said they attempted to arrest Benson at that time but that he refused to cooperate and was pepper-sprayed. He was booked at 11:24 p.m. Saturday at the Travis County Jail and was out early Sunday morning on $14,500 bond.
There was no resistance on my part," Benson told the Tribune on Sunday night. "Was I drunk? No."
Benson said there was alcohol on his boat but that he was not intoxicated and the boat was stationary when police arrived. He said he fully cooperated with officers and that this was the sixth time he had been questioned by lake police in the year that he has owned the boat.
"They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down," Benson said of Saturday's incident. "I'm thinking, I passed all the tests, did everything right. Then the officer told me we needed to go to land to take more tests. I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat.
"I'm not handcuffed. I'm not under arrest. I'm not threatening him. I'm not pushing him. I'm not touching him. And he sprays me right in my eye."
Benson said by that time, he was far removed from the family and friends left on his boat, a group that included his mother.
"Nobody saw what he did to me," Benson said. "I started screaming for my mother to come. That's when they put me under arrest. And the officer threw a life jacket over my head.
"Once we got to land, the Travis County police grabbed me and kicked my feet from under me. So I landed on my back while I was handcuffed. They held me down and held the water hose over my face. I couldn't breathe, I'm choking, I'm begging the cops, 'Please stop. Please stop.' Then they picked me up and dragged me backward toward their car. And I'm still being polite, asking them, 'Sir, could you please allow me to walk like a man to your cop car?' They just kept dragging me on."
The charges are punishable up to six months in jail and $2,000 each. No court date has been set. The BWI charge carries the same weight as a DWI in Texas.
Benson's lawyer, Brian Carney, said he believes the police were unjust in dealing with Benson.
"Right now it's one-sided, and I would like to know exactly what they're basing their allegations on," Carney said. "It's very, very early. And we still haven't had a chance to evaluate what exactly they think that they have.
"Those allegations are untrue. I think it's a shame that they proceeded the way they did. I can tell you right now that we're going to resolve this. We're going to work through it. And we're going to maintain our position that this was inappropriate and that he's not guilty of any of these things. Cedric was extremely cooperative with these officers. He complied. He performed their tests that they asked him to do."
Bears coach Lovie Smith said he wanted to get the complete story before commenting on Benson's status.
"I haven't had a chance to speak with Cedric yet, but anytime we're talking about one of our players getting arrested, you're disappointed in it," Smith said at the conclusion of rookie mini-camp Sunday afternoon. "What we're going to do from here, I'll go back and try to get as much information as I possibly can and go from there."
A spokesman for the NFL said the league was aware of the situation and is investigating.
Benson said he talked to Smith on Sunday afternoon.
"He knows I'm going to take care of my business," Benson said. "I always handle anything that I'm dealt with. He just stressed the fact that whenever anything like this comes up to call him first."
Benson, who had his 2007 season cut short by a broken ankle, was in jeopardy of losing his starting spot heading into the '08 season. The fourth overall pick of the 2005 draft struggled through his first three seasons with the Bears, failing to post a 1,000-yard campaign while averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. Benson averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry last season, finishing with 674 yards on 196 carries with four touchdowns in 11 games started. He missed the final five games with the ankle injury.
The Bears sent a clear sign that they wanted more production from their running back by selecting Tulane's Matt Forte in the second round of this year's draft. Forte's ability to get to the outside and catch the ball out of the backfield were dimensions the Bears missed with Benson in the lineup, although Benson showed flashes against Seattle and Denver last season.
"I have no control over what they decide to do," Benson said of the Bears drafting Forte.
"If they want to bring a running back in, OK, no problem. I love competition."
Benson was arrested twice during his college days. He was arrested for marijuana possession in May 2002 in his hometown of Midland, Texas. The charges were dropped when he passed a drug test and other evidence surfaced to clear him.
In October 2003, he was arrested for criminal trespassing after kicking down an apartment door in Austin. He said he believed his $15,000 plasma television was inside. He received an eight-day jail sentence but never went behind bars because of time served on the day of the arrest, good behavior, and the lack of available beds at the local prison.
Benson said he intends to be back in Chicago on Tuesday. He said he is about 98 percent healed from the ankle injury. But his latest off-the-field battle might leave a scar.
"This is tough to deal with because you're guilty until proven innocent," he said. "My name is blasted out there like I was fighting these police officers or something. That totally was not the deal. I'm not stupid."

So who is Brandon Lloyd ???
Well he's not the "person" in the Grossman jersey pictured up above, he is the Bears new wide receiver. Lloyd, 26, who has averaged 14.5 yards per catch on 130 catches in his career, is capable of providing that burst of speed and playmaking ability the Bears lost in Berrian. His five years of experience should be useful in helping the development of less-experienced receivers Mark Bradley and Devin Hester
His addition gives the Bears more depth with Berrian and Muhsin Muhammad gone and restricted free-agent Rashied Davis possibly headed elsewhere. Signing Lloyd, however, shouldn't keep the Bears from pursuing a receiver in the April NFL draft.
Lloyd could be a major risk. San Francisco picked him in the fourth round in 2003, and he fell out of favor with some of his 49ers teammates for being outspoken.
The Washington Redskins traded third- and fourth-round picks for Lloyd before the 2006 season, then signed him to a multiyear contract that included $10 million guaranteed. But Lloyd was suspended for one game in '06 for throwing his helmet and reportedly had a profanity-laced tirade against his wide receivers coach. Head coach Joe Gibbs told Lloyd to stay home for another game last season after the receiver missed a meeting.
Lloyd lost his starting job, went on injured reserve with a broken collarbone and missed the final seven games of the 2007 season after catching only two passes. He was released by the Redskins last month, ending his two-year stint with them with only 25 catches and no touchdowns.
Will he work for the bears? Lets hope so, he seems troubled enough to fit in.

Briggs is in!
Lance Briggs 3 time ProBowler has decided to make his keep with the Chicago Bears. This comes as kind of a suprise seeing as how On March 12, 2007 Briggs announced he no longer considers himself a member of the Chicago Bears. During a cell phone interview with Foxsports.com Briggs said "I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me, I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again." In explaining his demands, he said "The Bears have shown I'm not in their long-term plans so if that's the case, I don't want to be here." A report from FOX Sports on March 27 claimed that the Washington Redskins allegedly offered the Bears their first round pick in exchange for Briggs and the Bears' own first round pick. On March 28, Bears general manager Jerry Angelo confirmed that the Redskins have made a trade offer and stated, "We'll evaluate if that's good for us and get back to them". Angelo deferred the offer on April 3, but later stated they were interested in negotiating a deal the following day.
Briggs did not attended the team's first meeting after their Super Bowl XLI loss, or their mandatory mini camp session in May 2007.[10][11]
On March 1, 2008 the Bears re-signed Briggs to a six-year, $36 million contract to remain a Chicago Bear.
Interesting History for ole Briggs and the Bears. Personally im a fan of him staying..the stats speak for themselves:
In 2004 he led the team in tackles with 168, and was elected as a second alternate to the Pro Bowl. In 2005, Briggs was selected to represent the National Football Conference in the 2006 Pro Bowl
Now go get some wide recievers!!!!

Aint no lie...bye bye bye (Berrian)
No it aint no lie..or a boy band song....Bernard Berrian is going to be leaving the Bears. This last week Berrian had been visiting with our division enemy the Minnesota Vikings, and the word is he isn't comming back. Berrian led the Bears with 71 receptions for 951 yards and five touchdowns last season. The Bears had offered him a $25 million, five-year contract with $8 million to sign. They remained in discussions with agent Drew Rosenhaus during Berrian's visit to Minnesota, but couldn't lure him back. While this isnt breaking news, we all saw it comming, it leaves a Huge hole in the WR spot for the bears. Hester has made a statment that he would like to compete for a WR spot, it is an interesting proposition with his blazing speed, but they need some proven skill not someone new. The bears better be willing to dig into thier pocket books this offseasons or they are going to be in big trouble come preseason.

Brian Griese leaving town?
News is that the Bears will try to get rid of Griese before next Tuesday. So why is this happening so soon? It is reported that if he is still around by March 4th, 2008 the Bears will have to pay him a $300,000 roster bonus. With the Bears needing to fill so many positions this year, it is unlikely they will want to spend this extra money.
'Brian is extremely disappointed he will not have the opportunity to be free to talk with whomever he wants,'' said Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich. ''There's not any question that would be his preference.'
I think that Brian was a good backup QB, but not the starter that he wanted to be .

So are we still sad we lost Thomas Jones?
Like most bears fans I was sad to see Thomas Jones go this last season. His replacement for this year was Cedric Benson out of Texas. I thought that Jones and Benson were a good combo last year, making it all the way to the Superbowl. This year however Benson was picked as our lead HB and Jones went off to the Jets. The Bears invested alot in Benson taking him as the 4th overall draft pick in 2005, Players they passed on that year were Braylon Edwards (WR), Shawn Merriman (OLB), Ronnie Brown (RB) and Aaron Rodgers (QB) just to name a few. We lost Benson after 11 games this year to injury, wich sidelined him the rest of the season. Jones was able to play all 16 games of the season for the jets and I thought it would be interesting to compare thier numbers on the season.
Cedric Benson

As you can tell Jones didn't have a good year with the Jets. If Benson would have been able to finish the seasons going at the rate he was, its likely he would have put up better numbers than Jones. Im not a benson hater like most people, i think he still has a chance to prove himself this next seasons. On the other hand I dont like Adrian peterson at all, im hoping the bears get rid of him and look into free agency or a 3rd round draft HB to have someone to compete with Benson, and get the Bears running game back out of the trash.

Lovie worried Urlacher will kill Grossman
Urlacher ....arguably one of the best Linebackers in the game will have to put up with Rex for one more year. Urlacher is quoted as saying “They have fun. They fly around and they're always smiling. They don't know when they screw up.” Could this be a shot at Rex and his "always having fun" way of living? Hopefully Urlacher will check his firearms at the door if Grossman throws another 7 interceptions in 8 games..33 career.
Adrian Peterson?
Just wanted to put up a comparison of our " Adrian Peterson" VS the Minnesota "Adrian Peterson".
Our "AP" isn't cool enough to have a graphic like that..so here are the stats
SPLIT | ATT | YDS | AVG | LNG | TD | REC | YDS | AVG | LNG | TD | FUM | LST |
2007 | 151 | 510 | 3.4 | 21 | 3 | 51 | 420 | 8.2 | 30 | 0 | 3 | 2 |
Career | 284 | 1132 | 4.0 | 36 | 8 | 70 | 609 | 8.7 | 37 | 0 | 5 | 2 |
And here is the good AP
SPLIT | ATT | YDS | AVG | LNG | TD | REC | YDS | AVG | LNG | TD | FUM | LST |
2007 | 238 | 1341 | 5.6 | 73 | 12 | 19 | 268 | 14.1 | 60 | 1 | 4 | 3 |
Career | 238 | 1341 | 5.6 | 73 | 12 | 19 | 268 | 14.1 | 60 | 1 | 4 | 3 |
WOW.... Bears AP has been in the league 6 years and his career totals dont even match the good APS. It is embarassing, but think of how good we would be if we could trade them...even for 1 game.
Now that Both QBs are signed, who will get the hotter girls
Now that both infamous Bears quarterbacks have a signed deal..now its time to get some girls!!! The question is who can get hotter ones? Rex is known for "having a good time" both on the field and on the bench. He always seems to be in a elated state, whether winning or loosing. He is also part of the F**k it , im going deep club..I think the girls like this. Now Orton comes across as a "Man of the Woods" with his beard he refuses to shave, and supposedly planted more trees than "Johnny Appleseed". Its way to close to call, so I will have to make a poll for it soon.
QB party..Both Signed to a 1 year deal
Both Rex Gross and Kyle Orton have been signed to a 1 year deal for the 2008/2009 Season. So what does this mean? The Bears are not confident in either of them to be thier quarterback for years to come. With these short term deals also comes a more realistic possibility of a high round quarterback draft. We will have to wait till April to find out, but be aware Rex and Kyle..the party might be over!
Welcome to Touchdown Bears !!!
